Ask how your kids are with dogs. More important question. Tiny dogs are easily hurt by small kids. You need to think about how your kids are in the house and how much time you really have to devote to the puppies socialization with your kids. Chihuahuas get bity because they feel threatened and also because people often treat them like babies not dogs. Then they think they are the centre of the universe and act like it. Why do you want a Chihuahua might be a better question too. There might be a larger breed with similar attributes you want in a dog.

a well bred well socilized chihuahua IS NOT nippy or snappy or mean!

however they are small and VERY delicate.

i would NOT suggest a chihuahua puppy for your home, however an older chihuahua (2-6yrs old) would be good, and look for a larger chi...by breed standard this breed should be between 3-6lbs full grown, howwver there are many large chi and chi mixes in shelters that need wonderufll homes and would be great with kids that would be much better for your home...
i would suggests NOTHING under 7lbs with kids under 10.

Most chihuahuas have an alpha dog mentality. They tend to be very nippy and dominant. When I was a kid, part of my sisters nose was bitten off by a chihuahua, while she was taking a nap. You have to train them to be submissive. Don't be like most owners and think it's cute that a little dog is so bossy.

So are you saying are chihuahuas and kids compatible?
Chihuahuas make excellent pets for children, as long as the children are gentle, respectful, and properly supervised. Because the Chihuahua is such a tiny dog, there is more danger of a careless or unruly child hurting the dog than vice versa.
*If you need anymore help or questions with chihuahuas don't be shy to email.

Chihuahuas can be snappy, but not all of them are. I do not recommend chihuahuas for a household with children under age 8 because chihuahuas are small and fragile. Young children can easily play roughly with a dog, and sometimes not intentionally. It's better to be safe than sorry. I would recommend another child-friendly breed that's a little sturdier such as a Shih-Tzu, Pug, Boston Terrier, Bichon Frise, etc. Those breeds are bigger, and can romp around with active children. I highly recommend a Boston Terrier. They're goofballs, are bigger and can play with children, and they can be total love bugs. I also highly recommend you look into a dog or puppy at shelters. Check out There are many wonderful dogs looking for a good home, and a majority of them are child-friendly. Good luck in your search for a dog :)

Every dog is different, and I have met some great freaking chiuahuas, but I think if it's a puppy, and the kids are responsible you should be fine. These are very stressed dogs, they are little and nervous, too much loud noises and running around could make em wacky.

welll im no dog expert but if that certain dog you are getting has been raised around children i think it will be fine. yeah chihuahuas are snappy....i would think of how the children will react. are they good around pets? i would ask the previous owner or pet store about it though. =]

Chihuahuas and other small dogs do not do very well with small children. Smaller children are generally rough with a dog, as they do not know how to treat them properly yet. A small dog is fragile and will bite, and they can be snappish. If you have young children, I would get a medium to large dog. They're usually better around them.
