Start a Doggie Daycare

You wouldnt know what size the poodles were until they were full grown.. a toy is anything 10 inches at the shoulder and under, while a mini is 10-15 inches at the shoulder.

Papers do not mean show quality.. nor is a vet qualified to judge if a dog is breeding quality either. Vets can assess the dog's health.. but unless that vet is also an AKC judge, he cant determine if your dog meets the breed standard, nor can he evaluate genetic health issues.. these have to be done thru the OFA, CERF, BAER, and Optigen.

Dove Cresswells Dog Training

Vets generally don't know much about breeding and NOTHING about selecting breeding stock.

If you need to ask this question here it is a sign that you don't know anywhere near enough to be breeding.

Please go do some serious research on responsible breeding.

Start here:

Sit Stay Fetch, Good Dog!

The two Poodles are the same breed, they are just different varieties. You would likely get dogs who are too tall to be Toys, and too small to be Minis.

So what's the point?

Your vet can't tell you whether or not your dog is 'great for breeding' -- they cannot evaluate conformation or genetic health. They can only take the dog's temperature, look at its teeth and eyes, and tell you it looks healthy.

"Healthy" and "Breeding Quality" are two different things.

You have a lot to learn. Don't do this until you've done your research.

Note that The Poodle Club of America recommends Hip *and* Patella testing for Toys, Hip Testing for Minis, and Eye clearances for both varieties:

If you want to be responsible, you will do this testing.

Yea, you can do that. The only worry I would have is if the female is a whole lot smaller. I would not breed a real small female to a male that is larger. You'll have to make your own guess by looking at the puppies when they are about ready to go if they are toys or minis. The best way to do this is to find a weight chart . They aren't 100% accurate, but its about the best you can do. When you get your papers there will be the option of Toy, Miniature, or Standard. Just select what you think that particular puppy will be. I have bred two Minis and gotten an all toy litter before. It all has to do with size.

Sit Stay Fetch, Good Dog!

You could but why would you. There is a huge over population of dogs in the world why do you want to make it larger? What is your experience breeding dogs? Did you know that if you breed your toy poodle to anything other than another toy poodle that also has the proper paper work that she can never again have puppies that are registered? Have you ever assisted at a delivery of puppies? I could go on but I hope you are getting the message that you are not ready to have puppies in your life. For the health and safety of your dog have her spayed and tell your friend to neuter his Miniature poodle.

Dog Food Secrets!

Toy and miniature are just size designations and not separate breeds. However, the male must always be SMALLER than the female, so in this case it is not OK. Breeding to a larger male means larger pups, which means birthing difficulties, a large possibility of a very expensive emergency C-section, and a greater risk to your dog's life. Please don't breed without first getting yourself a good mentor with experience in the breed who shows and breeds only to better the breed. They can help you to choose an appropriate stud if your female is suitable to be bred and after you have gotten all of her health testing done with good results.

If you don't know the answer to that question, you are not educated enough to breed your dog...papers or no papers.
Please have her spayed, unless you plan to show her,

Dog Food Secrets!

You should not mate her with a large dog, she will have trouble birthing the pups. Please do not breed, you do not know what you are doing!

Start a Doggie Daycare

You would be breeding a mutt. The vet assured you she can breed? Has she had all her health testing done? Or is he just guessing. I'm sure, as a reputable breeder, you wouldn't want to breed mutts. But if you're confused a better person to ask would be your breeding mentor.
