Hi first got him to sit, in the garden is a good place, with no other distraction, let him see the ball tell him over again to sit wait, then throw the ball and tell him to fetch, give him lots of prays and when he has got this off pat, have someone with you tell him to sit let the other person hold the ball to the dogs nose and let him smell ball the other person go's and hides the ball now tell him to find the ball, it may take awhile for him to find it but make it fun, i find its easy with some treats to find than a ball, remember to give him plenty of prays i hope that helps kim

Oh, fun! Love goldens!

Make sure he knows the "Come" command.

Start with treats. Say "Get it!" Toss them and get him to catch them.

Go to a favorite toy. Toss it. Say get it. When he does, give the "Come" command. Give him lots of love and scratches. say "drop it" and a treat. He'll drop it for a treat.

Praise, pats and scratches! Toss the toy again. Repeat.

Don't try to take the toy right away. Don't teach him tug of war. Praise, praise, praise, scratch and treat! When he drops it for the treat, give him the treat, toss the toy, repeat!

Well first does he even like the ball? Can he play catch at all?
I'd start out real small at first.. Just rolls the ball to him an d when he get it make a really big fuss and give him a treat. He doesn't have to bring it to you at first but if he just puts it in his mouth than just go nuts, oh quietly so you don't want to scare him.
You can just roll it to him in the house too in a hall way. Takes time and patients to get them to retrieve. Think small steps first to the bigest one ok.

A retriever that doesn't retrieve but anyway hold the ball behind you back and run as fast as you can and that will hopefully trigger what is know as prey drive(the instinct to run after something)
