Chiq and Unique asked:
I am got a miniature schnauzer today. It is Saturday so I can stay home all day with it today and tomorrow but then on Monday the whole family goes out from like 7:45am-3pm. I want to know if Miniature Schnauzers normally destroy the house when the owners are out or do they just destroy their own toys. HELP!

Puppies don’t realize that they have specific toys to play with. Without supervision, the house is their toy box. It will most likely chew on whatever looks good as well as leaving little ‘presents’ for you to find.
When my dog was a puppy we would leave her in the bathroom while we were gone -to contain the mess. We always found the trash knocked over and toilet paper unrolled all over the bathroom. She was never in there for more than a couple hours though.

I think all dogs are different, but i have a toy schnauzer that’s 2 and everytime i leave she pees on my side of the bed. I now keep the little critter in her crate.

I am a big big big advocate for using a crate when you are not with your puppy, this will ensure your puppy is safe and alive when you get home. If the crate is large enough the puppy will pee in one corner and that is where you put the pee pad or papers. You want a crate large enough for the puppy to be able to stand and turn around that has an automatic water bottle attached to the side or a water bowl that will clip to the inside of the cage.

Keep her crated while you are gone. At that age, yes they will destroy the house. She will eventually grow out of it, then she can have free regin of the house. I also have a mini schnauzer, and he doesnt cause any problems when Im gone (he’s 4), but when he was a pup…. They are awsome little dogs, but you just have to make it past the puppy stage.

Well your Mini is a puppy, as that he/she will get in trouble no matter what. You should confine your puppy to a certain area, kitchen maybe? Get a nice gate(petsmart, Target etc.) this Will give your puppy more space than a crate and keep the rest of your place safe. Don’t use a door, dogs do not like being locked in a room with a closed door.
Make sure to leave giving your puppy a happy impression e.g. don’t sound sad leaving dogs pick up on moods very well.
To sum up, be prepared for some destroyed furniture or shoes, best thing to do is take it in strides and a good supply of chew toys
