since i am there from the moment she is giving birth i actually hold them right after they are cleaned and sometimes when they are still in the sack(to help open the sac when mama is too tired) just sit right there with her and hold one puppy at a time that way they also get a feel for human hands touching them, touch them all over from head to tail and everywhere in between.this procedure will help later in life with Dr's visit when they have to exam in odd places.

You can handle them very, very gently right now. Of course, you don't move them more than a few inches from their birth bed, and you don't hang onto them to the point that momma dog gets very anxious. Pick them up one at a time, stroke them gently, breathe lightly on their faces, and then very gently give them back to momma dog. This is the beginning of training them to react positively to interaction with humans. It also reassures momma dog that it's okay for people to be around her puppies.

You can hold them now. Just handle with care. The mother will not reject them. Make sure that you wash your hands before and after you touch them. Plus you need to handle them and check them over. There only sweet and have puppy breath once.

An adult should be able to hold them immediately, for a brief period.

A 2 yr old child would be held to a different standard.

You can hold them now. Be very careful though. They're fragile =) And when you put them down, dont do it too fast. it might frighten them.
