Vaseline on the edges of his ears will help with dryness. Let me say this though – you should avoid washing your dog with soap unless it is absolutely necessary. Dogs produce natural oils to aid in healthy skin and coat. Each time you bathe them you wash away the oils. Make sure your dog is drinking enough water as hydrating from the inside aides in keeping the outside hydrated as well.

I have 6 dachshunds, ages 11 to 2 and they certainly DON’T get dry ears normally, at any age.

First thing would be to see what you feed your dachshund – is it corn meal based supermarket junk or is it decent dry kibble with meat as the first ingredient, and no artificial preservatives? I feed mine Canidae Chicken and Rice, specifically geared towards good skin and coats, they do very well on it – no issues with dry skin or coats, or ear infections, since I put them on that.

You may also be bathing your dog too often, once a month, just before you put on the new dose of Frontline or Advantage is enough (unless he rolled in something nasty).
You should use a soap free dog shampoo like HyLite, that’s used by a lot of people who show their dogs and cleans the coat without stripping the oil from the skin.

If there’s still a problem, please take your dog to the vet to see what can be done for his ears – this is definitely NOT a normal part of aging and can certainly be fixed. Meantime, try a little antibiotic cream like Neosporyn applied to the dry edges.

Good luck, feed good food, don’t use harsh shampoos or bathe too often – and consult a vet if it doesn’t get better. No reason for a dachshund to have “leathery” ears.

Please get the proper medication from your vet, do NOT buy over the counter. Dog should see the vet so the correct meds will be used..

no, you should take him to the vet, the conditioner is never enough, i used to take my poodle to the vet, or you could just ask the vet, he told us to get some kind of liquid for dogs with this problem, sorry i don’t recall the name.

I think your doing what can be done about it, once dachshund’s get a bit older they start to get dry scaley skin. make sure your not bathing too often because this takes thenatural oils out of the pets skin. I dont know of much more that you can do. After all its really just cosmetic.
