I use K9 Advantix.
It kills them once they get on my dog.
Do not bathe your dog every week though. That will lead to bad skin conditions.

Bathe her in Dawn dish soap. Suds her up and leave it on a few minutes before rinsing.
You can get frontline or advantix online. You have to put it on either 2 days before or 2 days after a bath, but don’t put it on then bathe her with Dawn 2 days later as Dawn will remove it. (dog shampoos don’t, so get a dog flea shampoo ASAP)
You can get a flea comb in the pet stores. Concentrate especially on the neck area and the base of the tail; have a bowl of soapy water handy to rinse off the fleas and ticks it will pull out. Looks like a nit comb (for head lice)
Also there is a pill called capstar that will kill every FLEA on them (won’t touch the ticks however)
Keep your / her environment CLEAN – vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Wash and dry her bedding (in a dryer – heat kills the fles eggs) Set off a flea bomb and then another 2 weeks later. Spread an insecticide on the lawn areas she uses and water it in.
There’s plenty you can do. Weekly baths are not a good idea as they dry out her skin.
Check your phone book or ask the neighbors about a vet recommendation. If she is that covered with fleas the odds are extremely high she will have tapeworm as well. The vet can sell you the advantix and capstar.

It sounds like you have a heavy infestation. Bathing alone will not take care of this, since she is getting re-infested from the surrounding area.
The only way to get rid of them is to buy a flea and tick medication such as Frontline and put it on the dog. The vet office carries this. I don’t understand your statement that you can’t go to the vet because you don’t know where it is??? If you have a dog, you must have a vet?

Get front line first of all, then get a flea and tick dip. You need to bath her in the dip first thing (Make sure it’s for fleas and ticks!). Then get some tweezers and a flea comb and get ready. Most of the ticks will back out after the dip but if they do not, put vasoline on them and wait for them to back out.( Vasoline is one of the only human products that will not posion or hurt your dog.) If the ticks do not back out, use the tweezers to remove them & make sure you get all of the legs and head out. After this use your flea comb to pilfer through the dogs hair and remove the fleas that are left. (Most of them will be dead.) After all of this is done use the frontline on the dog to kill and prevent ticks and fleas!
My only other suggestion if this doesn’t work is to shave the dog. We had to do this to a dog we rescued. She had ticks and fleas so bad that even after a vet visit, we ended up having her shaved at a groomer. (Never shave the dog yourself, you don’t know what your doing!)

use a flea and tick prevention solution like
K9 Advantix or Frontline
ive been using Frontline Plus on my dogs since they were puppies and it works great! I never see any fleas or ticks on them.
in the winter, we don’t use it on them because they aren’t outside as much and the fleas and ticks aren’t either,
but in the spring, summer, and fall, we use it again.
also, it might not be a good idea to give your dog too many baths,
this might lead to irritated, dry skin, and your dog will become more itchy.
try one of those products, they work well and should save you the trouble of washing your dog so often.
good luck!

You bath her to much, I also have a JR. I use frontiline. I spray her once a month and to date she has never had any fleas etc. ALso if she has a kennel, make sure you wash her bedding at least every two weeks, fleas have a 2 week life cycle.

u are going to think i am out of my mind, but garlic is key. put garlic in his food. the garlic will give oil to the skin to help your dog have a shiny coat. the garlic also gives out this scent that ticks and fleas hate. it repless them. the only bad thing the doggy will have horrible breath. but the garlic is great and i have never used commercial products, alweays natural ones.
also for dry skin, mix in a spray bottle. half water, half apple cider vinegar and give your dog a fresh spray bath. the vinegar also helps if he has dry spots.
but for the fleas tha ticks you have right now, you will have to removed them yourself and get rid of any rugs, towels anything where the ticks and fleas can grow.

We use frontline for our three dogs and that work really good! but also bathing is going to hgelp somwhat but if the fleas are also where the dog live like in the house or somthing than its going to be hard to keep the fleas off for good and another thing that even after you bath them there going to itch because they will still have the bites from the fleas

You do need stuff from a vets because it’s the only stuff that works properly.
As suggested – Frontline or Advantage/Advantix. Bathing isn’t going to help. You also need to treat your house, because if your dogs has fleas they WILL also be present in the environment. You need to break the flea life cycle to be truly flea-free – when you’ve done this you can use Frontline Plus every 6 weeks to remain flea free.
As for finding a vet – how can you not know where your nearest is? Were you planning to wait until you were in a panic becuase your dog was seriously ill or injured before you found it?
Get your telephone directory and look in there.

Hi, I am a vet tech. just some advise.
DO NOT USE TOPICAL TREATMENTS! (ie, frontline, advantage…) They are extremely dangerous for animals and people. if you read the package it tells you to wear gloves and wash immediately if you come in contact with it. if it burns your skin and can send you to the doctors office, imagine what it will do to your dog. animals skin is way more sensitive than ours. I get the research studies through work on the topicals. They make your jaw drop. Animals have gotten tumors, seized, developed severe skin allergies and even died. Fleas and ticks become immune to the topical applications, so they have to make them stronger every year.
there is a wonderful product called Flea Free by Green Hope Farms. It is a flower essence that you put in the H2O dish daily. works great on fleas and ticks. To remove them is a little more complicated. Wash the pup with a natural shampoo, and comb with a flea comb. You can use Diatom. earth which is great for prevention and removal. it got rid of both of my cat’s fleas within 2 days with it, and it is very safe. You can also add garlic to the diet. simple, but it works great. natural topical sprays are good too. neem oil works good.
for removing them from your house, vaccuum everyday, and put the bag outside away from your house. they can breed in the bag. also, very simple, but really effective. get a light bulb about a foot off the ground, and put sticky paper under it. Fleas are attracted to warmth, and will jump right on the paper.
to find a vet, i would suggest going to AHVMA.org. they list all the safe vets around the world.
Please email me at if you have any other questions. Good Luck!

Fleas are a major pest. There are various species of fleas – cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas and rabbit fleas.
You can get rid of them by the safest and cheapest methods like boric acid.

If your dog keeps on getting flees constantly it will start to affect it’s health. You can buy a special ‘Hook’ thing from pet shops that will come with instructions on how to remove ticks. Ticks shouldn’t be left.
I feed my cat and dog garlic. (Garlic bread – they just lick of the butter). It seeps out through the skin and flees don’t like it – not sure of the affect with tick though.
You should also de-flee your house and the pets bedding, otherwise you are fighting a losing battle.

Ortho has a pretty good product out that you sprinkle pellets in your yard and use the spray in the house, I can’t use powders as I have no carpet only hard wood floors, but I would like to find a more natural way, but it works for me now.

Use frontline that is what we do to prevent our dog from getting fleas and ticks
December 11th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
I can suggest going to a vet in your area and asking about the cost of Frontline, alot of vets highly reccomend that. If you cannot afford that then I would try a flea bath. I am not entirely sure how to prevent ticks, I don’t know if you can.

It is better if you bath her twice a week.I also have a dog and like your dog they also have fleas and ticks. My sister bath them twice a week and after that we are putting “flea away powder” on their body and we are also trying to remove their ticks w/ our bare hands

this will help you allot and it will kill any fistation on your dog and people .put vinegar in the the conditioner and start at the head because the fleas will try to get in her ears nose or eyes also .and rub it in real good have a brush handy and brush her hair out as she is wet and it will only brush off the dead ones and the dieing ones and the best thing when your finished lightly rinse her good and then rinse her after words with a light water with light vinegar in a separate bottle and put it around her again .and dry her off and the smell of vinegar is strong and the bug will stay off the dog please don’t let the smell fade after a week and do it all over again to stay off the dog ..take care

I just want to add the Dawn does work and Advantage works for my dogs. You can get it on line too. BUT I thought my doxie had fleas and turned out to be allergies. I was bathing him too much. Poor thing. I brush him everyday now and use Hertz Oatmeal shampoo for dogs. be sure to make sure it is fleas and not scratching from an allergy.

Some fleas and ticks have to be removed manually. Shellgard has soaps, shampoos and anti-flea powder. I let soap and shampoo soak through the hair for a few minutes, then use a fine-toothed comb to removes les animales. If there are really plenty of ticks, I bathe my dog 2x a week, then really follow up with anti-flea powder. In the farms they use a chemical (?) called Sevin as powder, letting it stay on the dog to kill fleas.

The only thing I have found to work for fleas is Advantage. I think Advantix is for fleas and ticks. You can get it on Ebay where it is cheaper than at a vet. Baths, collars, sprays, etc., have never worked for my animals. With Advantage, you dont have to worry about your house. Treat the dog, and any fleas living in the house will die, when they come in contact with your dog. The directions are for once a month treatment, but I have found I only need one application on them through flea season.
