I have a german shepherd, he is 1 year old, and he walks fine on a leach…when i only take him one spot in the yard to go to the bath room, if i try to walk him anywhere else, he runs, and we have ducks in our neighborhood and he likes to chase them, is there any suggestions or books or classes any of you recommend for me???? He likes to ride in the car, but i can never take him anymore bc he likes to run

Sit Stay Fetch, Good Dog!
Any decent books on dogs will do. If you make it your PRIORITY. The joy of having a dog is to be able to bring him/her anywhere with you.
Unfortunately, you are a slave of your dog (and vica versa)
Ill behaved GSD is a problem.
Late Entry : my apologies to the sensitive know it all bunnies.

dog training takes time and consistency, you need to keep at it everytime. He’s a herding dog so it’s in him to chase the ducks. Before walking him out make sure he is calm. You need walk out infront of him and then invite him out, don’t let him just walk out by himself. the very moment that he pulls turn around and walk the other direction. Keep doing this, yes it takes a lot of time and work and the first few sessions you’ll probably not get anywhere but turning on the spot. But it works.

Dog Food Secrets!
I’ve heard the obedience classes at Petsmart are good. They cover leash training also, and they are reasonably priced. It could be that you are using the wrong type of harness, color, leash, ect. I had the same problem with my pit bull. Every time she seen kids, she wanted to run to them and play. You can imagine the problems this caused, considering most parents teach their children to be horrified at the sight of a pit bull. After obedience classes, I discovered that male and female dogs have different pressure points. Turns out a male dog reacts better to a body harness because the pressure point on his chest, while a female dog leads with her head. So, a head harness worked better for us.
Hope that helps. Good luck! ( :

Start a Doggie Daycare
Get a leash and a collar. Hold the leash firmly at your waist and use your body, not arms, when you go the other way. Everytime your dog goes infront of you turn and run the otherway. When he gets by you, praise him and tive him a treat. This will only take about 10 minutes. To get him to stop with you, stop, and if he goes forwar, turn and run the otherway. Same works if he goes too far to the side. I train with a prong collar as it puts less strain on my dogs neck and needs a lot less power( wich makes it even gentler) A prong collat acts like a mouth that nips like an alpha dog or mom dog would do to give a correction. They help you speak dog languange so your dog won’t be frustrated, he will know what you mean.
