We Will Be Back !! asked:
I have a Cocker Spaniel and a Labrador Retriever and when a Police car or Fire Engine go by with the Sirens on the Cocker Spaniel Howls the Labrador could care less , what makes the Cocker want to Howl at the siren ?
Now two people have said it hurts her ears but even if it is a faint siren from a long way off she still howls , how does that hurt her ears ?
The Lab is only a year older than the Cocker , and she does not react to the sirens at all .

A dogs hearing is more sensitive than ours. That is why they can hear some things we can’t, such as dog whistles. When a siren goes off like that, they bark because it is uncomfortable for their ears,

The high pitch of the sirens hurts their ears, even from far away, they have much more sesitive hearing than humans do. Is the labrador older than the Coker Spaniel? if so, the labrador’s hearing may not be as good…

I have Bloodhounds. They seem to sing at everything. I just think they join right in.

it doesn’t matter how far away it is.
if they here it is is too high pitch of sound for them to stand.

Dogs hear at higher frequencies than we do and for that reason they hear things louder or from further away then we do .. for instance once he was used to the noise your car or family car made he could hear you almost a mile away ..
Sirens emit a loud piercing sound that also has some higher frequencies in it that we can’t hear but your poor dog can and a theory is it hurts his ears
Some dogs are more sensitive to noise too just as some humans are more sensitive to things than others …
another theory is that they that the sirens sound like certain parts of a dog howl and they react to that .. no one knows for sure but its a fact some dogs howl others just bark its there way of communicating different things to each other .. or to us but we don’t speak dog ..

even though the distant siren is faint your cocker associates that sound with pain,as for why the lab is not affected, maybe that breeds hearing is not as sensitive to high frequency’s

My first thought was about it hurting their ears, but the more I think of it and don’t think that is it. I would say because they are answering the call. In the wild wolfs howl and other wolfs will answer if they are in range, most likely this what it is.

‘It is probably because it hurts their ears. A dog’s hearing is many times more sensitive than a Human’s.

its just a response that some vocal dogs like to do, some dogs have better hearing than others and some dogs are much more vocal.

Hey, wassup?
I heard that when they hear that, they think that, since dogs are pack animals, they try to jon in to the noise because they think it’s other dogs howling.
