Ryans Mom asked:

…And I’m not sure how my 10 year old Miniature Schnauzer will react. He thinks he’s king of the castle and our baby but I thought he would enjoy a puppy playmate. Can you share your experiences or perhaps someone you know had a good or bad experience doing this. As much as I want another dog I don’t want to upset him permantely. Perhaps they adjust after a while? I’m torn!!! Thanks.

How does your dog get along with other dogs, say at a dog park or a doggie daycare?

I know I wouldn’t get another dog, because our 14 y-o Mini Schnauzer has been an only dog all her life and thinks that she owns the world, and other dogs shouldn’t intrude on it.

well like anything, there will be an adjusting period. And what I mean by this is , one of the dogs will have to be the “alpha” dog. If your male dog is not neutered and you bring in another male dog that isnt neutered either, you will be asking for some knock down drag out fights.. my suggestion is to introduce a YOUNG pup to him.

We had a 6 yr. old that thought he “ruled” the roost as well, until we brought in another dog, anyway, they had their moments but now they know their places with each other and they ignore each other for the most part.. ocassionally they will play, but it is VERY few and far between! Dogs are like humans, they dont want a stanger throwed in the house with them either.

We had a 12 year old dominant mini when my mom brought home our first standard schnauzer. since the pup was young it readily accepted the dominance of the mini. The puppy also being schnauzer like helped alot. I would suggest getting a female dog, the are more docile, and more readily suggest beta postions. If there is an issue between the dogs, assert yourself as the alpha “dog” in the pack. My mother did this as our standard schnauzer pack grew” we now have 3, not including three left over from a litter) My mom is the leader of the pack, so we rarely have fights, even between the males. Anyway, your mini should ajust to another animal in the house, just make sure you and your family give them both equal attention.
