well i wouldnt suggest a standard, because thy are very wild, unless she is a very active woman then it would be fine, but remember poodles are quit expensive.

Start a Doggie Daycare

Ok- First off 59 is not that old...LOL that said, a poodle is a wonderful pet. We have had a miniature for 3 years and we just love her to pieces. As another user mentioned they do need to be groomed. We keep our dog in a short cut called the "Miami". She is groomed approximately every three months. She plays and is active but is also content to be a lap baby when we are not active. She is very excited about life and we never tire of her antics. I think a poodle would be a great companion for a single person seeking company. Go to petfinder.org and search for poodles in your area- rescue dogs make great pets and need homes. We got our baby through a local poodle rescue.

Sit Stay Fetch, Good Dog!

Toy Poodles make wonderful pets for older adults. They are great companions , generally easy to train , very smart and tend to enjoy the solitude and company of a quiet household. Although they can be good with children, they adapt better to a home with adults only and a quieter environment. They like the one on one attention a Grandmother could offer them and would return the affection. Grooming could be a problem depending on your Grandmothers health and/or finances. I had a hard time keeping up with grooming the one I had and ended up having to hire someone else to do it for me. It can be a little costly, but there are people who groom dogs at reasonable rates if you search them out.

Probably not a standard, but a miniature or toy should be fine, and they can grow old together. A lot of people see the haircuts then instantly dismiss them as a possible choice, but if kept in puppy/pet clip, they are surprisingly low maintenance, just a quick bursh over, and comb the ears, thats all.

Of course, if she would prefer a standard the ngo for a standard, but one of the smaller sizes would probably be more practical.

Great idea to have a poodle. If she's had a dog before she won't need any help but if it's her first then she'll need a book on the breed and help with training. At 59 she should be able to care for the dog as well as anybody. I wouldn't advise getting a puppy though as they can be a handful. Good luck,

Sit Stay Fetch, Good Dog!

I'm 15 and i have a toy poodle and she is so sweet and cute! I think a poodle would make a great pet for your grandmother. They love to play though, so is your grandmother gonna be able to do that? They have pretty high grooming needs too. if they go to long without grooming they wind up not really looking like a purebred poodle anymore lol!
They are great lap dogs and love to cuddle with their owner. Also, they want nothing more than to please their owner, so they are very easy to house train and teach tricks and stuff.
They also don't shed so she won't have to clean up after it!

Dog Food Secrets!

A poodle is an excellent dogs for older people, they love to be petted and loved on. Try to get an older poodle who is already housebroken, look at the Petfinder list. That way your grandmother does not have to bother with it, because it does take time. Another excellent dog, is the Japanese Chin and the English Spaniel.

Sit Stay Fetch, Good Dog!

Yes, they make excellent companions for senior citizens! Poodles come in three different sizes. Small (Toy), medium (Miniature), and large (Standard).

They are highly intelligent dogs, one of the quickest to learn of all breeds. But they require a lot of grooming. If your grandmother is able to handle that, she'll have no problem with these dogs.

If she decides on this breed, help her find a reputable breeder, especially if she's got her eye on a Toy Poodle. She'll have to watch out for common scams like "Teacup Poodles".

Have her take these quizzes online. They tell you a lot about different dog breeds and will tell you which breed is best for you according to how you answer the questions:
