Anything is possible. A lot of it has to due with backyard breeders and puppy millers not following the breed standard. They weren’t breeding for the apple domed head so the head structure deviated away from it.
I don’t know if your dog is like AKC registered but even with registration there is no guarentee a dog is purebred.

all dogs were mixed with some other breed at one time. that’s how you get a different breed. and anymore with all the mutts being passed off as designer dogs, it’s an old practice that’s just become more popular. it’s a very real possibility. i’m sorry but i couldn’t find anything on the net saying if it’s true or not. and i’m sure you’ve looked too and that’s why you’re here.

What will they think of next? Chances are your Chi is just not a very good example of the breed as she does not have the required dome head.. And not all breeds were developed by mixing 2 breeds together. Many were developed by selective breeding.

Bad topline,running gear or sizeor coat or color or tailset,etc.,etc.
NOT “hybrid”-that’s a cross between SPECIES! MUTT/MONGREL is a cross of BREEDS!

Deer chihuahuas are not crap. In actuality, the deformed apple head is a genetic mutation of the original deer type chihuahua- a much healthier version of the breed. Then a few malformed runts got created that were much smaller and the population seized on creating the world’s smallest breed.
AKC registry is a joke- they only seem to go for unhealthy standards in a dog, instead of what’s best.
Again, apple heads are runts bred to deformed runts to create what the AKC now calls “standard”. Totally inappropriate on the part of the AKC.

I forgot to add that the Chihuahua is the only breed of dog that descended from foxes, which is why you actually have the old time head of the original chihuahua.
Once again, AKC only recognizes deformed breeds of dogs, not healthy ones.
