Once again, AKC only recognizes deformed breeds of dogs, not healthy ones. In actuality, the deformed apple head is a genetic mutation of the original deer type chihuahua- a much healthier version of the breed. Then a few malformed runts got created that were much smaller and the population seized on creating the world's smallest breed. AKC registry is a joke- they only seem to go for unhealthy standards in a dog, instead of what's best. Again, apple heads are runts bred to deformed runts to create what the AKC now calls "standard". Chances are your Chi is just not a very good example of the breed as she does not have the required dome head.. And not all breeds were developed by mixing 2 breeds together. A lot of it has to due with backyard breeders and puppy millers not following the breed standard. They weren't breeding for the apple domed head so the head structure deviated away from it. I don't know if your dog is like AKC registered but even with registration there is no guarentee a dog is purebred. Anything is possible.
