kim s asked:
Apparantly she’s asked some others and they said no (most of the people she knows are single and working full time). If I dont take this dog, she will be going to the pound. And honestly, I wont be able to sleep at night wondering if she was euthanized or not.

Heres the thing, I have a 9 month old labrador retriever, I work from my home and financially am very capable, but, I know nothing about this breed. Can anyone give me some information? I’ve heard their similiar to labs personality wise but Ive never owned one.
Thanks
Oh thank you Mimi, you just reminded me that I forgot to add that Id like intelligent responses only.

They are a little more hyper than labs, but have a lot of other similar qualities. If you adopt this dog I think you would be very happy having as a pet.

this is a very loving but energetic dog! lot of care and attention,. if you have the time to put into ti take it in, and get your friend to hold on to it and help her find a good home. don’t let a good innocent dog wind up in the shelter.

All the Golden Retrievers I have known are very friendly and are good with other dogs. Why don’t you ask the person if you can “try out” the dog for a weekend and see how things go?

Goldens are usually alittle more laid back then a lab. If you can handle a lab you should be fine. Go to and do a breed search. That should help you. They need exercise of course and are a people dog so need to be indoors.
I think it is great of you for taken this on but it is not your responsibility to. Could this girl not call a rescue for help?

I’m going to star this for Goldengal.
I had a Golden Retriever as a teenager, fantastic dog. I’ve helped train a number of them… energy levels run from “oh my I can’t sit still” to “what? you want me to WALK?!!” All I have met have been readily trainable and VERY happy to make their owners happy (as opposed to some dogs who only work for what they can get out of it).
If you’re looking for a second dog, this may be a good choice for you as the 2 dogs will entertain each other (I always say “I’ll never own a Samoyed without another dog to entertain it”).
Good luck with your decision.

They are pretty similar to Labs in personality, just with more hair. =)
If you aren’t able to keep him, consider contacting a Breed Rescue Group near you for him and offer to foster him until they can place him. Dogs around 1 year are often better adoption candidates, and if you can foster him for the group, it will really help his chances of finding a loving home.

both breeds are akin.
Working/water dogs originally. Both will be good companions to each other on an equal basis.
It will be an easy transition into your home.

Well if you already have a Lab then your almost home free! Golden’s have just about the same temperament as Lab’s and they also have the same characters as Labs do.
Both sporting dogs the big difference is hair length color and Golden’s tend to be a bit smarter and they calm down sooner than Labs do. They will complement each other and hopefully be great buddies ot each other and to you too. I would not worry about a thing. Take the Golden and love it and your get that back 10 fold!
They do require regular brushing and they can have ear problems but I’m sure with your Lab you know about most of these things already. Same with the Golden’s.
ADD: Golden’s love their Owners to have a great sense of humor too!
I have 3 right now!
You can e-mail me anytime if you have more questions OK.
I’d take the Goldie in a heart beat!
Thanks Animal_Artworks for starring the question for me to see.

The only information I can offer you is these sites:
I hope it helps, give you the information you need. I think this, Golden, would make a great companion for your Lab, especially because they are both still young! Good Luck!

oh I’ve been in this situation a HUNDRED times. i volunteer w/the SPCA and on occasion foster for them as well.
so many friends/family/the guy down the street..etc. have asked the same of me due to me volunteering. i just love how ppl dump animals on anyone…considering they CLAIM to love them so much but…”i just can’t take care of FiFi anymore, blah blah.”
that sickens me and i can understand why you would always wonder. it’s the same reason i ended up helping out all those ppl that love to dump dogs on my doorstep.
anyways….Goldens are very much like labs. so i don’t think you need to worry about getting a wildly different dog.
what i WOULD suggest is get a phone book, and find the listing for a NO-KILL shelter, or the humane society, Or the SPCA.
there are even breed specific rescues you could google online.
just google golden retriever rescue for [insert your city and state here].
there are rescues and shelters that will NOT kill that dog and are able to help, or find help for this dog.

Contact the local Golden Retriever Rescue in your area. They are wonderful dogs and there should be no problem finding her the home she deserves. Good luck:)

Goldens are GREAT dogs and are very similar to the Lab personality wise; I’ve owned Labs and my cousin had 2 Goldens. So if you already have a Lab you already know how loving these dogs can be. The only difference, Like Goldengal said is that they required more combing and brushing (especially their butt featherings). I don’t think they shed quite as much as Labs do either, my Labs always seemed to lose more hair than my cousins Goldens did.

Labs are very close in temperment. Get a book on your way to pick up the dog.
