greatest american dog
I bleed blue and gold asked:

Both my boyfriend and a couple we are good friends with both own American Pit Bull Terriers. As I’ve gotten to spend more time with these great dogs, I’ve noticed some cute, silly quirks they have. The female Pit that our friends own gets so excited when people come over or when she’s playing that it seems as if she can’t just wag her tail. In fact, her whole body from the middle down seems to wiggle back and forth. It’s extremely cute and I was wondering if this is just a quirk unique to her or something that’s common among this breed?

Another thing I’ve noticed is that both our friend’s dog and my boyfriend’s dog lay down differently then any other dogs I’ve ever seen. Instead of tucking their hind legs up close to their bodies when they lay down, they stick their hind legs out to their sides at like a 45 degree angle. Again this is just something cute I’ve noticed and was wondering if it seems to be a “APBT thing”?
ealstr: Nope, not a Mountaineer, just a Buffalo Sabres fan. :)

The wag is in all bully breeds. They are the happiest go locky dogs. Isn’t it horrible people chain and ignore these dogs that love with such enthusiasm.

The laying down all dogs are different.

I am privileged to share my home with 2 of these great dogs, both spayed females.
The 16 month old wags her tail in exactly the manner you spoke of.
The laying down part as well.,although they will curl into a ball so tight sometimes its like they don’t have a spine.lol Do your dogs like to sleep on their back? Mine do.I say they are little hussy, laying there with everything exposed.lol The older dog also has a cute habit of doing a “belly crawl”,you know ,like soldiers do.She stretches her hind legs straight out behind her and pulls herself forward, she’ll even push herself around in circles. The more I laugh the faster she’ll go.
They are a wonderful breed to own…they will do most anything if they think it pleases you.

I agree with the above poster: Not breed related.
I have a Maltese/Yorkshire Terrier mix and when she gets super excited (like when I come home from work), she wags her tail and her whole bottom.

She also does the funny sit thing.

Sorry, nothing special about either quirk. I have rotties and they both do those things. Sounds like you have some sweet dogs, though.

The wiggling you mentioned is common among all happy well cared for dogs. The way they lie is dependant on their body type. They wouldn’t do it if it wa not comfortable. My Greyhounds lay like that or they “cockroach” on their backs with all 4 in the air. Your bf & his friends just have happy dogs, enjoy them.

mine wages his body the same way and when he lays down his hind legs are spread out like a pair of pork chops. i love to call him my handsome meat head. he is brindle with a white chest and a white diamond behind his head. he is so handsome and so much fun to be with.

I have a 1 year old APBT and she does both of these behaviors. She is a rescue and her ears and tail aren’t cropped(which is fine by me). I always tell people that the only thing you have to watch out for w/ her is her kisses and her tail when she’s happy b/c if it hits you it will feel like a bull whip! lol

I think that both of these behaviors are associated w/ the bully breeds. It’s to bad none of the media will do a story on how cute and loving these dogs are…you always here the bad stuff!

At our house we call the outstretched leg deal “Frog Dog”, both of our Pit Bulls and our AMSTaff show this trait.

The total body tail wagging thing is just the wildest thing and really helps soften the ‘blow’ when you tell the unknowing and / or ignorant that that the loving dog that they are petting and that just wants to be friends is the INFAMOUS and EVIL Pit Bull.
