My friends have a shih tzu and overall he’s a pretty good little dog. He did have a barking problem when left alone at home but they were able to solve that using a citronella training collar. He is very good now. He is small but sturdy, a bit stubborn bit sweet and plays nicely with my much larger golden retrievers.

Well let me tell you that as the proud owner of two shi tzu maltese dogs, I can tell you that yes they can be loud dogs, but they don’t have to be this way. The best thing to know is that they are one of the easier dogs to handle, and that a little hard work and paitence will pay off and you should have a happy little dog!!

I don’t think they are any more or less noisy than any other small breed dog. They make wonderful pets, but depending upon how you keep their hair, can be a little time consuming. Most people with Shih Tzu’s tend to keep them well clipped, with only their tail, ears and head with long hair. If kept long, you need to comb it on a daily basis or else they tend to get matted. Shih Tzu’s a usually outgoing dogs with minimal health issues. However, if you live where there are alot of allergies, such as Florida, you may have a problem with that. You also have to watch for dry eye as they get older and some can be a little “snorty” as they are a short-muzzled breed.

I have a shih tzu for over 2.5 years, very friendly and loyal. She only barks if some one is coming. It good to train them when it is ok to bark. If it is someone I know coming ,I ask her to retrieve a toy it tend to keep her busy and she has something in her mouth. It is also very welcomed by the guest.

My shih tzu only barks at a cat that comes in the yard and teases her by being just far enough away she can’t get to her. Otherwise she doesn’t bark and is a very friendly, easy going and playful dog. She does have a toe fetish and nips at toes when someone first arrives if they are wearing sandals. Our shih tzu is the perfect choice for us. We love her to death. I think you made a good decision. Good luck.
