nmopall asked: I’ve had 2 cats for over 15 years and recently we’ve bought a miniature schnauzer puppy, which would now have been here for one year in a few days. Within the first month of bringing the dog home, i assume the stress was too much for the one cat and it died but the other cat stuck around. The cat and dog fight all day long so we keep the cat locked in the basement when the dog sleeps (it’s a big basement with a kitty litter box and food, water, etc… Not like we’re completely ignoring it) and we let him come up during the day, only to see them fight. Recently the cat has been very annoying, shitting on the floor, not going in its box, and eating the dogs food. I want to get rid of the cat but i know that if i gave it to someone it would just be devastated, however i do have the option to put it to sleep.
Any ideas?
And no, getting rid of the dog is not an option at all and training them to get along is impossible.
In response:
Im not asking if i should get rid of the cat because its old, it just doesnt seem fair to be locked in the basement and attacked by a dog when it comes upstairs to see the family.
After reading the answers, the “putting to sleep” option is obviously out of the question and i can’t believe i even considered it. It sounds like putting the kitty door to the basement would be a good idea and punishment for the dog can’t hurt when it fights with the cat.
To the people who say put the animal up for adoption, i dont see that as an option… For one, they could put the cat to sleep without dignity, at least if I did it I could give it a proper goodbye however I will not be taking that option. I also know that the cat could not adjust to a new family, it has been with me his entire life, in his own environment. I have looked for personal friends to take him but no one would.

Shelly asked: My boyfriend’s dog is four years old. We are moving in together and I would like the dog to be allowed in the house. Unfortunately, our future roommates have a house cat. The dog has never been socialized, doesn’t like other dogs and tries to get cats when we go for walks. He is a nice dog, extremely cute and great with children. He just wasn’t socialized/trained to get along with other animals. Has anybody had this experience? Have you been successful introducing an older dog to other animals, especially a cat, and having them become friends, or at least, not kill each other? Let me know if you have and what you did to accomplish it. Thanks.
If it matters, he’s an American Eskimo dog and weighs about 24 pounds.

An opportunity has been cast my way to take over ownership of a pure bred Red Nose APBT, commonly referred to as a Pit Bull. The current owner has neglected the dog and a mutual friend has convinced the guy to give up the dog to a better home. The dog is a 6-7 month old female, unspayed. I have a 6 yr old male APBT/American
Bulldog who is great with other dogs. My question is since they are very close to the same breed, are they compatible even though they are opposite sex? I’ve heard some people say that your second dog of the same breed should be of the opposite sex. I’ve also heard that the 2nd dog should be the same sex as the younger will learn from the older, and the older one will become the alpha dog. I’ve had a bad experience dog sitting a friend’s female German Shephard/Rotweiller mix who constantly fought with my dog. My dog never started fighting with his female. She was the one instigating the fights. What do you think?
I said neglected. I didn’t say abused. They guy keeps the dog in a kennel all day long, never plays with her, no walks, nothing. He thinks his part time daughter loves the dog, but upon speaking with the girl, she couldn’t care less about the dog. On top of that, he is living with a friend who’s wife is severely allergic to dogs so the dog must stay outside, and he must limit how much he is aroung the dog then the wife. Yes, I met the dog, and she is wonderful! I like the breed for the dog, not for the fighting or agression. They are a strong, extremely loyal and affectionate breed, and I do not support the breeding of APBTs for fighting.
And yes, she will be spayed as well as brought up to date with her vaccinations. Ears will not be cropped either.
Sorry about your cat, but isn’t the cat the dog’s archenemy? Many dogs have a high prey drive, APBT’s no doubt exhibit this. I know mine does!
For any other APBT basher’s out there, take the time to read this:http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm

Aneleh asked: I have 2 cats and three dogs. One night, I ran out of cat food (the dry type) and my cats were hungry. So since I had dog food only and the shops were closed, I gave them dog kibbles. They’re more or less of the same shape and size and are made of the same ingredients – chicken. My cats took a nibble and refused the rest of the bowl, preferring to go hungry than eat dog food. The next day, i got them a fresh pack of made-for-cats kibbles and they immediately dived in and ate up. How come my cats knew what I gave them wasn’t cat food?
I also know of dogs that won’t eat cat food for the long run (not mine though, cos they’re pigs and will eat anything).
It would be good if a pet food manufacturer can answer this question. Is there some special ingredient you put in cat and dog food that makes cats and dogs know which kibbles is who’s? Also, nowadays, dogs are eating fish too – like salmon. You can’t say it’s the ingredient. How come they know the difference?
