Christy P asked:
Do chihuahuas make good apartment pets? I have been wanting to get a small dog, one that isn’t too expensive.

Canine luver asked: I am getting a
chihuahua puppy maybe after vacation [and I'm raising my grades, and earning money for one] , from a rescue or good breeder. [I've done my homework!!] I’m not stupid and I love all dogs, [I have a mutt, but he is a good as a purebred]
Now I’d like to dress it up in a cute tee or hoodie once in a while. Not shoes and whole outfits, but something comfy and warm. Do you think this is ok? I want a tee for my medium sized dog, but they don’t sell big shirts. Plus chihuahuas can get cold sometimes. Thanks!
And some names would be cute. My other dog’s name is Chips. [Already mentioned before: Salsa, Dip, Cream.. basically food. lol. But give any suggestions!]
I live in Florida, but believe it or not, it rains a lot, and sometimes it gets so cold people wear more than 2 layers of coats and clothes. Hoodies aren’ t that bad.. I’m not actually gonna put the hat part on the head.
How does it humiliate the dog. Actually many dogs LOVE wearing something, and begin strutting their stuff. They are not wild anymore, but domesticated. What if you were cold but weren’t allowed to wear a jacket?
Or freezing. I dont have a heater, our house gets too warm by itself, it traps heat.. Dogs are used to wearing collars, why not shirts?
Sorry I keep adding details.. No I won’t take it in a doggy bag, unless we have to take it on vacation with us, or something of that sort. He/she won’t go to the mall, just the doggy park, walks, maybe petsmart, and if we need to, obedience training.I think I want salsa as the name..

SoCal?Nocturnal asked: I wanna take my
chihuahua in my pool this summer but I’m not sure if she will be able to swim. She doesn’t really like her baths, she shakes through the entire bath and she shake when she hears water. Would it be a bad idea to take her swimming or would she probably learn to like it?
Thank you all for the tips, I think I will buy a life jacket for her first time just to get her used to it, and I know I would NEVER leave her unattended!

star_momma asked: We currently have a shih tzu/bichon frise mix, and we’re looking at getting him a playmate toward the end of the year when we move from an apartment to a house. We’ve encountered a couple of chihuahuas lately and rather like the little guys, but I’d love to hear from people who have owned them and have more experience with the breed. I know socialization at a young age makes a big difference as to whether they tolerate other dogs and humans later in life.

gittarheero asked: I now have 2 Chihuahuas instead of one, and plan to travel with them both. I have flown with different airlines that allow you to bring one dog in an air-line approved bag or carry on, but have had no luck finding an airline that allows two dogs. Anybody know of any? Would it matter if they were in the same bag?

Stephanie T asked: I have two chihuahuas @ 6 months, boy & girl, both fixed, current with shots, and they sleep in the same room where I sleep and keep the crib.
My plan is to move the two little rascals to the other living room before going into labor…. but after that how will I know my newborn is allergic to them? What kind of signs of allergic reactions should I look for? Please share, thanks!

Autumn P asked: I know the cost of a purebred chihuahuas has probably increased with the appearance of the tacobell dog a few years ago and Paris Hilton using them as a statis symbol. But when you want one just to love and hug, Just for a pet why do you have to go into debt? Pet quality non-breeding (spayed and neutered) chihuahuas are no better than a mutt, really. I am just curious. I will probably go to the local humane society and adopt a small cute dog. It is just that there was always a chihuahuas around when I was growing up and I thought I’d like to have one now. But I can’t go into that much debt.
I have learned (in Canada) most breeders spay or neuter the chihuahuas before selling them and they are still asking from $1200.00 to $2000.00. I have contacted 2 Rescue Shelters and they are selling these chihuahuas for $1200.00. I am not looking for a show quality dog. I am looking for a pet. Only a pet. I do not want to mortgage my house either. For the price breeders are asking for a “fixed” dog is rediculous. I mean they are no longer show quality. They can not be used for breeding. There valu other than a statis symbol is “0″. I am not looking for a statis symbol. or a shiny object to place on my finger. I just want a pet. Chihuahuas were a family pet when I was growing up. I can tell you we paid no more that $200.00 then. I just find this pricing for a dog you just want to love is silly.
I agree. If these dogs are show quality dogs then ask the $1200 to $2000 price.
But once you spay or neuter them (most breeders in Canada seem to do this) there is no monitary value left for the dog. It is just a fixed dog. Worthless.
I am not saying that it isn’t difficult to breed these little guys. And I don’t care that you spay or neuter them. I don’t mind reimbursing the breeder for the neutering, and first shots and a little something extra for actually breeding the pup. But to ask $1200.00 for a non-breeding, unshowable dog is …. well just crazy. I don’t mean to argue the point. But as yet I haven’t seen an answer that best answers my question. Why are breeders asking $1200.00 to $2000.00 for a non-breeding already spayed/neutered, unshowable dog?
