How do you housetrain a Cocker Spaniel puppy?

About to get a puppy in a few weeks and I want to have everything in place, but I dont know what to do about house training, do i need to use puppy pads or litter training? I ve heard about this crate but not sure how to use?
Will I need to leave the puppy in his crate or can I leave him in the kitchen or will he mess everything up?
