She is a 3 year old dachshund and the owner has her brother as well. Both are spayed . Her brother does not eat the newspaper like his sister does. Both eat the same diet and the same amount. The newspapers are layed down by the doggie door but both are house broken so the newspapers are there for their feet coming in and out. As soon as they eat their kibbles she goes over to the newspaper and tears and eat some, but not a large amount.

Beagle
physics.nerd89 asked:

Allie, our four-year-old beagle, suffers from very strong seasonal allergies. She is taking a medication that helps dull the itchiness and other symptoms, but the side-effects are cruel. She has not only an increased appetite, but a slowed metabolism as well. On top of this, she is always sleeping! While we have another dog (a perfectly healthy lab), Allie does not get nearly enough exercise during her day. She has always enjoyed lazing around, but it has really caused a big problem now — she has difficulty getting onto her feet, waddles when she moves, and can’t really climb anything without great effort.

Are we too late? We realize that we could have done a lot more, but now we fear that there are very little options for us, and time is running out. While we have restricted her diet (with care), we do not believe that this will be enough.

How can we help motivate our Allie to exercise more?
A few responses:

Treadmill idea is interesting!
Yes, we realize that beagles have a tendency to be overweight and overeat — I’ve looked up a few websites on this.
She is indeed on steroids — are shots considerably more expensive or something?
As for toys, Allie is not a playful dog. She’s always happy, but definitely not a playful pup. She doesn’t like playing with our dog Jackie because I think she’s a little afraid of Jackie’s aggressiveness (which is honestly very mild — Jackie’s just the playful sort!). So, no toys.
The horrible part about walking our dear beagle — she hates it. We tried a lot over the summer to walk her (probably every day for a month), but after a few steps, she just suddenly stops and sits down! It’s going to take a lot of effort to get her to take a half-an-hour walk, but maybe we can pull it off. I’ll look into the idea.
As for the hambone idea, we tried that with bread, her favorite food (unsuccessful). And no need for a bike! She’s too slow!
Her allergies are so severe that her prednisone being decreased would probably not be a good decision at all. She gets incredibly itchy, and often forms scabs on her head from scratching it almost viciously with her claws. No, I wish we could lower the dosage, but I think this would make her suffer even more.
Allie also happens to be a girl, for those who hadn’t figured that out already. =P

Boxer dog
lisab asked:

I have a 6 month old boxer. We recently have been letting him roam the back yard. He seems to want nothing more than to eat the grass to include dandilions. We feed him regularly and have taken him for vet check ups and he is healthy. I was wondering if this is normal or is he lacking something in his diet? The vet hasn’t returned our call yet.

We feed him Pedigree Puppy Chow.

We don’t have any chemicals on the grass and it is a new house so no other animals besides maybe an occasional rabbit has been back there.

Thanks.

German Shepherd
dynomite asked:

I just got a german shepherd from a person I know. They were going to give her up because she shed too much hair and they didn’t like her. I adopted her and I love her so much. She is such a good dog. I can’t believe how people can treat animals so awful. Her litter should arrive in the first week of May. My question is what can I do to make sure she has the best delivery possible. Should I feed her a certain diet or include certain things? I have an appointment with the vet but not until two weeks, just wanting to get advice on how to give her the best care possible. Thanks!
I am currently feeding her pedigree puppy food. Is that ok or should I buy something else? We also built a huge pen for her so she can have her puppies there. She is already use to it, we leave her in there for a few hours a day, and I do walk her daily. I bought a pool and have some hay ready to fill it with when she delivers, is that ok?

Bulldog
sam asked:

We started our Bulldog puppy on the B.A.R.F. diet, so far he loves it, but he’s not too good about being able to break/chew on the bones, so he usually just tries to swallow them. Is there something that can be done to try and teach him to do this? Or should we just stop giving him bones?

Sonny M asked:

What is the best brand of dog food for a German Shepherd? Should I give him some raw meat instead of dog food every once in a while? Also he’s just a normal household dog, so he won’t really need anything like Eukanabu b/c he’s not a show dog.

cocker spaniel
Frank asked:

My cocker spaniel had some serious diahrea for several days. Luckily, we followed our vet’s advice and she no longer has this problem. But during those days, she would lick herself constantly. Now, the diahrea is gone, but she has been coughing ever since she spent so much time licking herself. Does she have fur caught in her throat? Personality wise, she’s her usual self – the only difference is the cough. Should I be concerned? Thanks!
Wow, so many replies already! She didn’t spend any time at the vet’s – they told us to feed her a diet of chicken and rice for a few days to see if that solved the problem, and it worked wonders. I’m almost certain the cough is due to hair she may have licked off herself, but to be safe I will keep a close eye on her for the next few days.
Thanks for the replies. I’ve got a billion and one dog related questions to ask in the future, and this seems like a very knowledeable place to ask them!
