dog fleas ticks
ScienceNerd07 asked:

We tried Revolution, only to find fleas and ticks on our dogs (who are between 13 and 20#). Then we switched to K9 Advantix and not only is much more product used per application, but the spot is very gooey for a long time. Plus, the dogs itch at the application spot so obviously it won’t work in the long run. What have you used successfully?

Should we give Revolution a 2nd try? Is there something additional I can give my dogs so that they won’t itch from using Advantix? What about Frontline or Advantage or others?

I liked Frontline, wasn’t sticky and doesn’t wash off. Has a nice smell for that kind of medicine. Also kills ticks.

Advantage is essentially the same as advantix as far as the oily spot. I would try frontline, we use that on our dog and have never had a problem. Are you bathing the dogs after you put it on? Because revolution and advantage/advantix can both be washed off by shampoo or just water… frontline cannot (which is another of it’s nice features). Also, when you apply it, do it in a few spots down the back instead of just one, that’ll help with the oil spot :)

I train dogs with a service dog program, and they use Biospot on all their dogs. It seems to work well, and it lasts a long time, even if the dog gets wet.

I have used Advantage for years with no problem

Advantix has been associated with glaucoma & seizures in some dogs.

frontline has had problems for the last several years.

I don’t think you gave Revolution a fair shake. are you sure you applied it correctly?

Bio-Spot is the same as all the rest… just look at the ingredients. Don’t forget to check the expiration dates.

Frontline is an excellent product. Give it a try. It costs more, but it works. I have been using it for 4 years and I have never seen a flea on my dogs.
But with all flea preventions, you must apply it as directed. Most are once monthly, even if you do not see fleas.

FYI advantage just came out with new product called Advantage Multi. I have only read about it in a journal, so I have no personal experience with it. I work for emergency clinic, so we do not sell flea prevention products, so we likely will not order any. It targets fleas, ticks, mites, and is also a heartworm and intestinal parasite preventive. You can ask your vet about it.

frontline, and a pill called capstar which gets rid of already existing fleas. why? cause it works :)

  8. annteeria Says:

Frontline is by far the best.

I use K9 Advantix. If the spot is to ‘gooey,’ why not run it down your dog’s back. I’ve never had that problem since this is what i do for both my dog and cats.

Also, Revolution is used to help ear mites. Is this a problem with your dog?

i use frontline plus, simply the best o n the market .
i use the other stuff, and it didnt work for my dogs.

I use Advantage multi and haven’t had any problems with it. It’s supposed to be better for fleas and ticks then revolution. I used to use revolution and never had any problems with that either. So you could give it another shot or go with the Advantage multi!

frontline has always worked for us and we are in a wooded area. Also if our dogs have fleas – Dawn is the best at killing them off. You definitely want to get rid of them if you have them so that your dog doesn’t get heart worm.

  13. Orion Says:

I’ve tried a whole slew of products and I personally would only recommend frontline or advantage. You can purchase a flea shampoo to help get rid of and easy the itchy skin before applying the monthly product. Seem to work really well for us. All the other products just don’t seem to be as affective.

  14. Jessica S Says:

I use Frontline..Goes on easy and it doesn’t leave a gooey mess.

  15. basketball_3424 Says:

Frontline is better, because the K9 advantage doesnt work the whole month.

  16. Shadow's Melon Says:

We use the Frontline which covers fleas and ticks with great results. Just make sure the dog you apply to is not bathed two days prior or after the application (this goes for any topical flea treatment). Frontline is the only one we have used and not needed to try anything else so far.
