Jules asked:
I’m in the market for a Standard Poodle puppy, and have been looking at some pictures online of some 9-week-old puppies available from a rescue. These puppies look shaggy, with furry muzzles and fuzzy ears. In all honesty, they look like little terrier dogs to me. How can I know if I’m really getting a purebred Poodle? What should I look for in a Poodle pup?

They look like a big old cotten ball if they don’t have a hair cut.
I would look for a puppy from a breader that has some sort of papers with them, That way you’r pretty sure what you have gotten

they honestally look like a “rosta” dog all shaggy and the hair is just kinky you are not supposed to cut their puppy coat either until they are a year old

the poodles look shaggy because they only look “fancy” like the ones in the website below because they cut their fur like that.

yes, they look shaggy…please do a bit more research so that you are comfortable with what you are getting. search specifics like “8wk old standard poodle”. if you are buying a purebred puppy you will get registration papers to send in and usually you get a paper that is the dogs pedigree(family tree).

Well I know about dogs and here you go!!
1.)It shouldn’t matter if it’s pure-bred. Pure-bred dogs live shorter and get diseases
2.)If it has some matty curls, it’s a poodle.
3.)Ask to look at the puppies records. You know, well their mother and fathers’ breeds
4.)Ask a vet or local animal society. Show them a picture and BAM!!
5.)If they have faces that look WAY to big for them, it’s a poodle! I know…

They remind me of a curly sheep dog and contrary to popular belief you DO need to have the puppy’s coat cut well before they are 1 year old!!!! If you let it go it is a severe case of mats that can hold moisture, bacteria, and dirt not to mention the fact that the skin cannot “breathe” and can become inflammed and unhealthy! Also St. Poodles MUST have their ears plucked free of hair fairly regularly to prevent ear infections. A lot of St. Poodle puppies will have been groomed and their hair cut before they leave the breeder. I know I have 2 Standard Poodles myself.

These are what Poodle puppies should look like with out being clipped:
Here is the AKC standard for the Standard Poodle:
The best thing you can do is look up “Standard Poodle Breeders” on Yahoo or Google and just look at some of their puppies and just compare them. You should be able to tell right away weither it is purebred or not.
If all else fails and you decide not to get the puppies, why not try a Standard Poodle Rescue? :
Sometimes they will get puppies in, if they rescue a pregnant dog. So you may just luck out. Also you can try to look at shelters near you, and also available poodle puppies/dogs.
Hope that helped!

Standard Poodle puppies MUST be groomed frequently starting at least as early as 4-5 weeks of age. I start grooming my puppies when they are at this stage and they get groomed EVERY single week thereafter until they go to their new homes. They are introduced to clippers… brushes… blow dryers.. you name it.
A standard poodle puppy that gets to the age of 12 weeks or so and has never been groomed before?? Is a NIGHTMARE. They are afraid of the process… afraid of the feeling of clippers on their feet, afraid of blow dryers, you name it! Professional groomers hate to groom poodle puppies that were never introduced to grooming young. And for some poodles they will get used to grooming eventually (those that were not groomed young) but some NEVER get used to it and they just hate it for the rest of their lives!
Try battling a 60lb standard poodle to shave his feet some time when he was never groomed regularly when he was young… Horrible! He about threw my back out! I just groomed a one year old standard poodle a few days ago that had NEVER been blown dry in his whole life! He was scared to death of the blow dryer.
Poodles MUST be introduced to grooming when young. RUN like the wind from any breeder advertising puppies for sale that have not been groomed!
