I start grooming my puppies when they are at this stage and they get groomed EVERY single week thereafter until they go to their new homes. They are introduced to clippers... brushes... blow dryers.. you name it. A standard poodle puppy that gets to the age of 12 weeks or so and has never been groomed before?? Is a NIGHTMARE. They are afraid of the process... afraid of the feeling of clippers on their feet, afraid of blow dryers, you name it! Professional groomers hate to groom poodle puppies that were never introduced to grooming young. And for some poodles they will get used to grooming eventually (those that were not groomed young) but some NEVER get used to it and they just hate it for the rest of their lives! Try battling a 60lb standard poodle to shave his feet some time when he was never groomed regularly when he was young... Horrible! He about threw my back out! I just groomed a one year old standard poodle a few days ago that had NEVER been blown dry in his whole life! He was scared to death of the blow dryer. Poodles MUST be introduced to grooming when young. RUN like the wind from any breeder advertising puppies for sale that have not been groomed! If you let it go it is a severe case of mats that can hold moisture, bacteria, and dirt not to mention the fact that the skin cannot "breathe" and can become inflammed and unhealthy! Also St. Poodles MUST have their ears plucked free of hair fairly regularly to prevent ear infections. A lot of St. Poodle puppies will have been groomed and their hair cut before they leave the breeder. I know I have 2 Standard Poodles myself.
