Go to. Type in your zip code and the size dog you want and you will see lots of small dogs. Adopt a dog who needs a home from a shelter or rescue. Do not buy one.

I grew up with a maltest and they are beautiful and intelligent dogs. Mine would wait for when I brush my teeth and then he knew it was bed time so he would run to my bedroom and wait for me. And would wait by the door when I came home from school.
So of course my answer is biast but I would say Maltese!

There is one thing you do have to be careful with smaller dogs and that is if you have other younger kids around because small dogs can be injured a lot easier and kids have a tendency to run around a bit without really watching where they are going. Still I would suggest a shih tzu because they are a little bit more sturdier then the maltese is. Also Maltese being very white get stained around the mouth easily it’s hard to keep them bleached clean!

i would go neither…i would get her a king Charles spaniel, their sad look and fantastic temperament, she would get nothing but love from the dog. Have a look at them and i bet you and your daughter, will fall in love with them.

I’d personally go with Maltese, my friend has a Shih Tzu and he’s not the best behaved dog. But of course that won’t be true for all Shih Tzus. Here’s what I got about each breed’s temperment off of the AKC (American Kennel Club) Website:
Maltese:
“For all his diminutive size, the Maltese seems to be without fear. His trust and affectionate responsiveness are very appealing. He is among the gentlest mannered of all little dogs, yet he is lively and playful as well as vigorous.”
Shih Tzu:
“As the sole purpose of the Shih Tzu is that of a companion and house pet, it is essential that its temperament be outgoing, happy, affectionate, friendly and trusting towards all.”
And May I also suggest a Havanese. I was looking into them when I was looking for a dog. Cavalier King
Charles Spaniel’s are also very loving house pets. Hope I could help!

Actually, no dog is probably the best dog for a 14 year old Girl. In 2 years, you’ll get your drivers license and care much more about hanging out with your friends and BOYS and forget all about the dog.
Wait till you get out of school, get a good job, get a place of your own, then get a dog.

From what I know they are both great dogs. Here is some information about both.
Maltese:
Shih Tzu:
If you want a dog that doesn’t shed check out the Toy Poodle: or some type of Poodle Mix. I have two Chipoos (Chihuahua/Poodle Mixes) and they are wonderful dogs that dont shed much at all. Very devoted, playful and smart. You can find information and pictures of them at .
Check out or your local animal shelter and see if they have any of these available.
Good Luck!

I would recommend a Shih-tzu! They are the best dogs! They don’t shed, they like to love and be loved, they will follow you all over and sleep at your feet, they love to play, they are not yappy or hyper dogs, they come in all colors – they are just the most wonderful breed! They also get along well with each other, kids and they love cats!
I have an aunt that lives up north and she has Maltese. Infact, she has three of them. She show them also. So, they must be good breeds as well. But, like someone else stated I would think it may be hard to keep them white. I don’t know about staining around the eyes and/or mouth, but I find that VERY unattractive.
Also, someone else mentioned the Cavalier King Charles. I have heard they are wonderful breeds as well! When I went to buy one of my Shih-tzus the breeder had a litter of the Cavalier’s in her home in a play pen. She said her favorite breed was the Shih-tzus until she owned a Cavalier. She said they are quiet dogs with great personalities! The down side is they do shed and they are EXPENSIVE dogs!
My parents would never let me have a dog growing up. They are not animal lovers in the least. I didn’t have a dog until I got married. I think it is great that you are letting your daughter have one. I know that it will be her dog, but it will be family – everyone in the house will love a Shih-tzu!
I do have a Shih-poo. She is half Shih-tzu and half Poodle. She looks like a Shih-tzu, but her nose is longer and her hair has curl ( like a Cocker Spaniel). Anyhow, they breed these two dogs together to get the look of a Shih-tzu and the brains of a Poodle. My Ebony is SUPER smart!
I highly recommend a Shih-tzu! Good luck!

I love shih tzus. They are very cute.
They are hard to train though.
Also, you have to HAVE TO get them from a good breeder and pick yours wisely. I have had them that are really anti social and timid. The one I have no is more aggressive and I picked him for that reason. (He is not mean) but it keeps him from being a fear biter and with a 2 year old that is important. He is just a fiesty little fella.

Shih tzus are very very good with kids but they need lots of grooming such as brushing and combing daily and will probably need to be shaved or clipped like 2 or 3 times a year. They need just a daily walk around the block and a person to play with. You mentioned it will not be left home alone witch is good because if they are they get behavioral problems. Maltese do okay with kids, are good watchdogs, have high energy indoors, and also need lots of grooming, just like the Shih Tzu and they don’t need much exercise. They are pretty much equal it just depends on your preference. In my opinion maltese are cuter! but its your pick!!! oh and if you want to get cute clothes for your new pup here are a few links
good luck and if you have any questions just email me
