The American Bulldog. I have pitbulls who are very very strong but when it comes to testing strength, weight pulling. I have never seen a dog beat an American Bulldog. And to the person who answered Rotts and Pits for their size, Rotts and Pits are nowhere close to the same size. An APBT should be right around 55lbs, the breed standard. Those 100+lb dogs called Pits are just miniture ponies in disguise. APBT is a working dog and is not to be bred for looks or size only working drive and temperment alone. And there is no true way to measure a dogs true jaw strength. And how did the Romans use and American dog before America existed?

The English Bullmastiff is the largest and most powerful dog in the world. Weighing in upwards of 300lbs.

The most powerful of North American breeds is the Newfoundland.

The Newfoundland is a large dog, well muscled and heavy of bone. The skull is broad with an arched crown and pronounced occiput; ears are set on the side of the head and are small and triangular. Eyes are wide apart and deep set, small and dark brown in color. The Newfoundland’s expression is soft, kind and proud. Every part of the Newfoundland’s body and carriage convey power and strength. Neck, back and legs are strong enough to pull a drowning man from the water, and webbed feet also add to this dog’s swimming abilities. The tail is broad at the base and carried either low or out, but never up. The Newfoundland’s outer coat is water resistant, coarse and either straight or wavy; the undercoat is dense and soft. Coloring is black, gray, brown, and “Landseer” (black and white).

I think it is the American Rottweiler. Pound for pound they are awesome. They have a more pounds of pressure in their jaws then the pit bull and are an all around great family and working dog. They have it all, they are protective, can herd and be used in harness. They are a very old breed, the Romans used them to protect the army camps. They have taken a bad rap of late, people want them but have no idea how to raise them to be wonderful family dogs.

rottweilers are muscular and powerful dogs. As are many bigger american breeds. St. Bernards and bull mastiffs are large, powerful and very well muscled dogs. I myself own a full sized doberman, very sleek animals but muscled and strong.
