The breeder will be knowledgeable about the history of the breed and will be active in dog sports (agility, tracking, obedience, rally, and herding all come to mind for a GSD). They are not eager to make a buck, but rather in producing dogs with fine temperaments and structure. They will be asking you a lot of questions and may or may not accept you as a potential family for one of their dogs. Does this sound like a pain in the ass? Maybe! There should be one in the area. Most of the time they are cheeper from a breeder because you don't have the middle man to pay. And they are a lot more healthy.
